"Alpine Ascent"
These uplifting scents of mountain air and pipe smoke are inspired by Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati. He is the patron of Italian Confraternities and his intercession is frequently invoked by students, mountain climbers, youth, and Dominican tertiaries. Pier Giorgio's feast day is July 4.
Behind the Inspiration:
Pier Giorgio is well known and loved for his example of true masculinity, and in perhaps his most famous photograph he is in the mountains smoking a pipe. Growing up near the foothills of the Alps, he was a skilled mountain climber. In a letter he wrote, "With every passing day, I fall madly in love with the mountains; their fascination attracts me."
In another famous photograph, Pier Giorgio is climbing a mountain face. He actually sent this second picture to a friend just days before his death, having written "Verso l'alto" on it. His message can be translated "To the heights" or "To the top," a play on his love for mountain climbing and his deep love for God.
Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, pray for us.
